Obituary for Bernard "Bernie" Joseph Cibik

CIBIK, Bernard Joseph "Bernie"

Peacefully at Garden City Manor on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at 89 years of age. Loving husband of the late Adeline (nee Zieba) (2022) for 70 years. Caring father of Brian and the late Richard (1996). Dear grandfather of Stephanie and her husband James Young. Proud great-grandfather of Madeline and Merrin. Bernie is also survived by his brother Albert Cibik (Ann) and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by brother, Joseph Zeman (Mary), sister, Beatrice Wagner (Carl), and sister, Annie Savel (Martin).

Bernie was born in Krakovany, Slovakia in 1933. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1938 and resided in Smithville and Welland before settling in St. Catharines when he got married. Bernie was active in the minor league sports community for both baseball and hockey for many years and was St. Catharines’ Sportsman of the Year in 1985. He began coaching Legion Minor Baseball in the late 1950’s. For more than two decades he served as a coach, timekeeper, manager and convenor of the Lion’s Midget Hockey League, as well as assisting with the CYO Hockey Organization. For more than a decade, Bernie was the ice convenor for not only the St. Catharines Minor Association but for all teams below Junior B. For many years Bernie was the timekeeper of the St. Catharines Junior A Teepees and Blackhawks. He retired as a supervisor in the foundry at General Motors in 1992 after more than 35 years of service. After retirement he and Adeline enjoyed travelling, especially to any city which had a major league ballpark and even more so if the New York Yankees were playing. In recent years you could find him at one of his great-granddaughter’s baseball games or dance recitals.

In honouring Bernie’s wishes a cremation has taken place with a private family graveside service at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens at a later date. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Pets Alive Niagara would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements entrusted to Considerate Cremation & Burial Services, 26 Nihan Drive, St. Catharines (between Lake Street & Scott Street), 289-362-1144. Online condolences may be made at CCBSCares.ca
