Obituary for David Ellwood Newell

NEWELL, David Elwood
1943-2022

On Monday, November 28, 2022, after a brief illness, with his adoring family by his side at every moment, Dave felt at peace enough to let go and join many loved ones gone before him. Dave was genuinely loved and respected by an amazing number of friends and the love he received was always returned. Nothing made Dave happier than unconditionally helping those in his circle, and often those who weren’t, everyone ended up being his friend. He lived an active, full, adventurous life, on his terms, the way he wanted, right until the end. We all learned from that. Our broken hearts will mend, and we are all so grateful our wonderful, father, grandfather, friend finally has the chance to catch his big fish. Born February 9, 1943 in St. Catharines. Son to Gladys and Alexander Newell. Loving husband to Olive (Ollie) and widowed husband to Joanne. Dear mother to Sandra (Wayne), Jeffrey (Sharleen), Pamela, Michael, Maria, and Stephen. Grandfather of Samantha, Wesley (Kait), Colin, Trevyn (Alysha), Brent, Mitchell, Serge and Hillary. Great Grandfather to Jayden, Isaiah and Mila-Joy. Dearest Uncle to Ricky, Linda and Kathy. Adopted father and friend to Roy. Companion for life to Pip. David spent most of his life working for Hayes Dana Forge plant in Thorold where he was an active representative and outspoken activist in the CAW (Canadian Auto Workers) union, mentoring the generations of young men who came after him in the company. During those years when Dave was not working, he would spend time as a member in the Canadian Corps Association, organizing social and charity events and participating in endless dart leagues at the headquarters center located on Gale Crescent. As the years passed and Dave’s retirement came in 2000, Dave became a member of the Moose Lodge in Western Hill establishing and enjoying the lifelong relationships to this very day. Some of the most endearing times we enjoyed with Dave was fishing in Deseronto, where all the family and many friends were invited to enjoy rustic camping and fishing holidays creating memorable times we all remember, priceless! A Celebration of life for Dave will be held Saturday, December 10, 2022, 1pm. at the Moose Lodge, 92 Permilla St., St. Catharines. In keeping with Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Considerate Cremation & Burial Services, 26 Nihan Drive, St. Catharines (between Lake Street & Scott Street), 289-362-1144. Online condolences may be made at CCBSCares.ca
