Obituary for Dr. John Thompson Kell

KELL, Dr. John Thompson

Niagara Falls, Ont, passed away on March 2, 2022, at the NHS-Niagara Falls Site, as the result of a stroke. Dr, Kell was in his 81st year having recently celebrated his 80th birthday. A tribute video by his son, David, was such a joy for him to watch. Celebrities, family and friends spoke of their respect and love for this wonderful man.

Dr. Kell was formerly of Antigonish, Nova Scotia where he spent all of his formative years. John was well known in town as a star pitcher for his little league baseball team in Antigonish winning many awards and trophies. He attended St. Andrew’s High School and later S.F.X. University.

John went on to join the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society as a priest. His desire was to serve on the missions. During his summer holidays, he went home where he enjoyed driving with his Dad on the mail route. John had hoped to catch up on those memories by once again driving that same route. He will be driving that road again with his father in Heaven.

John's ministry in Scarboro took him to the Dominican Republic, where he was loved by the Dominican people and all he came into contact with. John returned to Canada, deciding that he would serve in other ways - he was laicized and later married.

Dr. Kell is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cathy; son, David (Amanda); grandchildren; Holly, Taylah and Noah of Eatons Hill, Queensland, Australia; brother, Regis (Martina) of Antigonish, NS, sister, Leah (John) Devlin of Fredericton, NB; predeceased by his brother, Neil (Dianne), sisters and their husbands; Agnes (Robert) Napier of Halifax, Mary Margaret (Don) Armstrong of Halifax, Ann Maree (William) Peterson of Florida.

Dr. Kell leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to mourn his loss. He touched many lives and will be remembered by all for the kindness and understanding he always showed. A lifelong University of Notre Dame football fan, and Toronto Maple Leaf supporter, Dr. Kell had a love of sports growing up as a young talented baseball player.

Graduating with his Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Kell then went to Kingston, Ont., where he was employed by Corrections Canada in the Federal system as a Clinical Psychologist. In 1978, Dr. Kell and his wife moved to Fonthill, Ont. when Dr, Kell became Director of the Mental Health Clinic at Welland County General Hospital, where he was employed for 25 years. During this time, Dr. Kell served for 12 years as Trustee from Pelham/Wainfleet in the W.C.S.S. Board.

Dr. Kell was also a consulting Psychologist for the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board. Until
his passing, Dr. Kell worked for nearly 30 years as a consulting psychologist in the Social Assistance Program for The Regional Municipality of Niagara. Both staff and clients he worked with will attend to the high respect they held for this wonderful man.

Many were unaware that Dr. Kell fought Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (MCL) for six years prior to his passing. He received excellent treatment by his Oncologist, Dr T. Kouroukis and staff of the Juravinski Cancer Center, Hamilton, Ontario. Dr Kell fought cancer and was doing well but succumbed to a stroke.

Cathy, David and family wish to express their sincere thanks for all the expressions of sympathy and caring shown to them during this deeply sad time. Deepest gratitude to a dear family friend, Margaret McNamara and to Jay and Tricia Naphin & family.

Cremation has taken place. At a future date to be announced, a Celebration of Life will be held in Dr Kell's honour with a gathering of family & friends.
