Obituary for Margaret McGill (Smith)

McGILL, Margaret (nee Smith)

Margaret McGill was a force of nature. Strong, proud and indomitable right to the end.

She passed away peacefully on February 3, 2021, at the age of 97.

From simple beginnings in Aberdeen, Scotland, second oldest in a large, boisterous family, Margaret crossed the ocean to build a rich and full life in Canada. A wife, mother and community leader, she went on to become active in politics, brokering deals in back rooms, managing campaigns for members of parliament and respected by premiers and prime ministers.

Margaret loved fiercely, expecting much and giving more. She had a wicked sense of humour, was always immaculately dressed and could turn the most ordinary outfit into a fashion statement with the quick addition of a perfect scarf or pin. Never one to sit still, she took great joy in the simple pleasures of life and was constantly delighted by a morning walk along the lake or a bright blue summer sky.

Margaret’s greatest joy of all was her family. After moving to Toronto, she met and married Ken, the love of her life, and had two children, Anne and John. Over the years, she became the beloved Nana to six beautiful grandchildren and four adorable great-grandchildren and loved nothing more than spending time with them and hearing about their antics and accomplishments. Margaret lived a remarkable life and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Margaret was predeceased by her devoted husband Kenneth William McGill. She was loving mother to Anne and John and loved mother-in-law to Chris and Alexandra. She doted on her grandchildren: Alexander (Marieke), Andrew (Shelby), Elizabeth (Tibor), Stephanie, Samantha and Sarah and her great-grandchildren: Catalina, Matteo, Owen and Hazel. She will also be missed by her large, extended family in Canada and Scotland.
