Obituary for Marilyn Joan Lanigan (Pirrie)

LANIGAN, Marilyn Joan (nee Pirrie)

It is with immense sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Marilyn Lanigan (nee Pirrie) Thursday, December 21, 2022, after a courageous 5-year battle with cancer. With her daughter, April, and son-in-law, Alex, lovingly holding her hands, The Lord came and peacefully took her into His presence. Marilyn has been the devoted and cherished wife of Larry Lanigan for the last 55 years. Marilyn is the adored and much-loved mother of Lisa Lanigan (Brent), April Schlieck (Alex) and Aaron Lanigan (Tawny). She is the treasured grandmother of Griffin (7), Brinley (5) and Declan (5), whose recent visit and self drawn pictures of love and encouragement gave her so much joy.

Marilyn is predeceased by her parents, Don and Violet Pirrie. They were best known for being part owners of Welland Home Furnishings in the 1970’s.

Marilyn was the oldest of five children. Her siblings Jim Pirrie (Diane), Nancy Lyons (Aaron), Jane McLellan (Walter) and Peter Pirrie (late Theresa) will miss her immensely as well as her nieces and nephews and their families.

Marilyn loved children and was a teacher with the Niagara District School Board for over 40 years. The last 20 years of her career was at Plymouth School in Welland. She touched the lives of many children that passed through her kindergarten class and was well respected by all of her co-workers. Each year she guided and educated thirty children (without assistance) through their first year of education and gave them the cornerstones of knowledge that they would carry throughout their lives.

Marilyn was a woman of great Christian faith and found fellowship with her Christian family at Ridgeville Bible Chapel and Portal Village Bible Chapel. She was a beautiful piano and organ player and dutifully graced the congregation with her talents during the singing of the hymns.

Her faith was strong throughout her illness, and we would join her in a prayer of gratitude for The Lord’s work and her family’s love throughout this difficult time.

Special thanks to the staff members of the NHS-Woolcott Wing who made her wish come true by allowing her to be in the same room as my father during the last weeks of her life. With grateful hearts we appreciate all the love and care during the last week of her life at the United Mennonite Home in Vineland. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

Everyone is welcome to join us in the Celebration of Life to honour our wife and mother at 1 pm Saturday, January 14th, 2023, at Portal Village Bible Chapel, 309 Elgin Street, Port Colborne. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Agape Valley at https://store.agapevalley.ca/donate

Mom: You were an exceptional Mother. We all love you!
