Obituary for Wayne Robert Allen

ALLEN, Wayne Robert, PhD

With heavy hearts, the family of Wayne Robert Allen, 88, of St. Catharines, Ontario, sadly announce his unexpected passing at his home on May 22, 2022. As a devoted husband and father, he is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Wilson Allen, and their three sons; Dr. Scott (Aileen) Allen of Lexington, Massachusetts, Dr. Shawn Allen of Elmhurst, Illinois, and Dr. Todd (Jessica) Allen of Cambridge, Massachusetts and their three grandchildren; Tyler, Sadie and Mackenzie. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Lynn Allen. Born on February 28, 1934 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to Thornton Wilfred Allen and Vera Lucille Ripley. Wayne graduated from Hiram College in Ohio with a B.A. degree in Biology in 1956, and from the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, New York with a Ph.D. in plant pathology in 1962. He immigrated to Canada in 1961 to work as a research scientist for Agriculture Canada, identifying, characterizing, managing, and controlling numerous fruit viruses, and later expanding his research into the virology of vegetables and nursery ornamentals. In 1965 he was appointed head of the plant pathology section at Vineland Research Station where he periodically served as Acting Director. He was an invited member of the New York Academy of Science. He retired in 2002 after four decades of research. He greatly loved the outdoors, long camping, and canoeing trips and tending his garden. He will always be remembered as a kind, loving husband and father and a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed. In honouring Wayne’s wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial donations to The Heart and stroke Foundation, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Considerate Cremation & Burial Services, 26 Nihan Drive, St. Catharines (between Lake Street & Scott Street), 289-362-1144. Online condolences may be made at CCBSCares.ca
