Obituary for William Hawthorn Aldridge

ALDRIDGE, William “Billy”
November 4, 1941 - July 26, 2022

On Tuesday in his 81st year and after a brief illness, Billy passed peacefully at home. Predeceased by his father and mother, James and Catherine, and survived by his wife of 55 years Irene, daughters, Elaine (Gord) and Karen (John); his beloved grandchildren Luca, Liam and Emma. Billy will also be greatly missed by sister-in-law, Andrene (Bob); nieces, Wendy (Chris) and Caroline (Scott) and their children along with his fur baby, Zoe.

Billy always put his family first, spending many years watching his girls swimming competitively and dance recitals, without complaint. They treasure memories of hunting for the perfect chestnut to play “conkers”, paddle boating in Queen’s Park and Saturday afternoons at the Glasgow Transport Museum with Dad. His grandkids will always remember Grandpa playing mini putt, racing around the go cart circuit, building Lego sets and playing hockey. He will be loved and dearly missed.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, he became a well-respected shipbuilder. His work took him to several different countries, and he left his mark on some well-known structures such as the QE2, the former Toronto Sky Dome and the intricate steelwork of BCE Place. He was able to build and fix anything. He emigrated to Canada to provide a better life for his family, always happy to sacrifice to ensure others were taken care of.

He was a history buff and voracious reader, especially anything with a war theme. He loved his Glasgow Rangers, war movies and a good peat malt whisky. He had a lifelong love of animals and was often called upon to help give medication to family pets or pet sit, never complaining. He was a “no fuss” kind of guy and therefore a private funeral has taken place. He would be thrilled if donations were made to the Lincoln County Humane Society in his honour.

Arrangements entrusted to Considerate Cremation & Burial Services, 26 Nihan Drive, St. Catharines (between Lake Street & Scott Street), 289-362-1144. Online condolences may be made at CCBSCares.ca
